  • The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) held a special meeting on seasonal influenza on 16 November 2017 in Canberra.
  • ATAGI reviewed epidemiological data from the 2017 influenza season. The season was dominated by influenza A(H3N2), which predominantly affects older people. There was an early start to the season, with a prolonged peak and high numbers of notifications.
  • ATAGI considered how the influenza immunisation program could be improved to enhance protection for older Australians, specifically in relation to timing and choice of influenza vaccines.
  • ATAGI discussed a draft report of a systematic review on the safety of using inactivated influenza vaccines during pregnancy. The Influenza Working Party will present the final systematic review at ATAGI’s February 2018 meeting.
  • ATAGI discussed and endorsed updates to the influenza chapter of the Australian Immunisation Handbook.
  • ATAGI discussed and endorsed the 2018 influenza statement for immunisation providers.
