  • The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) 43rd face-to-face meeting was held on 14 and 15 October 2010 in Canberra.
  • ATAGI members reviewed the Conflict of Interest and Confidentiality processes.
  • ATAGI provided advice concerning the risks for contracting Japanese B encephalitis in Pakistan and the appropriate vaccines currently available to protect Australian emergency staff and volunteer workers travelling to Pakistan.
  • ATAGI met with Professor Michael Frommer, National Immunisation Strategy (NIS) consultant to provide advice on the development of the NIS. ATAGI outlined a number of immunisation issues that will need to be addressed at the NIS Forum in December.
  • ATAGI members reviewed evidence in relation to the National Immunisation Program pertussis vaccination schedule, notifications and vaccine effectiveness.
  • ATAGI will commence planning for the development of the 10th Edition of the Handbook and will also shortly be providing the amended Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella chapters for public consultation.
  • ATAGI discussed the current process for adverse events reporting and will subsequently provide advice to the Department of Health and Ageing regarding system improvements.
  • ATAGI provided advice on the use of Gardasil® in adolescent males and will continue to complete work detailed by the Terms of Reference for the Working Party
  • ATAGI provided pre and post submission advice to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) on vaccines that could potentially be listed under the National Immunisation Program (NIP).
  • ATAGI members provided the following advice relevant to the administration of pandemic and seasonal influenza vaccine:
    • ATAGI will be undertaking a review of the current schedule regarding revaccination of adults aged 65 years and over who have already received a dose of 23vPPV under the national pneumococcal vaccination program for older Australians.
    • ATAGI is liaising with the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (England) on vaccine issues.
    • The next ATAGI meeting is scheduled for 24 & 25 February 2011 in Canberra.
